About Me

You may find that your succulent needs to be repotted well before 18 months. Crown rot can also happen in wet soils. Crown rot spreads quickly, and because it affects parts of the plant below the soil line it can be difficult to notice until it is too late. Therefore, they are perfect for cold climates, as they can handle temperatures down to -30 degF (-34.4 degC). You can sow seeds indoors at temperatures between 65-75 degF (18 to 24 degC). Sempervivums tolerate heat but prefer to be in the shade with temperatures between 65 and 75°F (18 and 24-degC). They require very little other than sunlight, some watering, and an average humidity. Succulents for the most part are not bothered by common insects, but there are those that are extremely harmful and can cause more than an annoyance but can actually kill your beloved plants. Succulents can be either small by nature or can stay small in spite of adverse conditions.

It was quite difficult to get the plants from their pots as they had grown so large that the openings of the pots were very small. The offsets cluster together around the parent rosettes, creating mats of rosettes. Gently lift the offsets away from the mother Rosette. Remove the stolon linking the two and plant them in well - draining soil. Hoya Kerrii 'Variegata’ (Variegated Sweetheart Hoya), is a semi-succulent, slow-growing plant that has variegated heart-shaped leaflets. The vine weevils will eat leaf leaves in spring and early summer but can cause more damage to plant roots during fall and winter. Spring and summer are the best times to divide offsets. They should be at least 25% of the mother Rosette's size. They are found at elevations of 3,000 to 8,000 ft (900 - 2,500 m). These range from Morocco to Iran through the mountains of Iberia to the Alps and Carpathians, Balkan Mountains of Turkey, Armenian mountains to the northeastern portion of Sahara and the Caucasus. The best environment for them to thrive is the one they are used to.

Watering in the morning or at night is best. Your plants' water storage strategies start from their shape. Although succulents and cacti do not technically require fertilizer to survive and grow, the right fertilizer will give them the nutrition boost they need to thrive and bloom faster. This is because they have more light absorbing surface. You can sow seeds directly on top of porous potting mixes in spring. They will not germinate if they aren't covered. By adding sand/pumice/perlite, you can modify the soil's ability to drain. A pot with drainage holes that are wide enough to allow for easy plant growth should be chosen. The plant will stop reproducing if it is completely removed. This succulent stands out in a room due to its unique color. The leaves' colors range from green, yellow and orange to red, pink, brown, and even red. A great arrangement can be made by looking for colorful succulents that have beautiful leaves.

After letting the plants dry for a while, you can use a spray bottle to mix 50/50 rubbing alcohol with water. Use a blast of water from a spray bottle and try to knock off as much as you can see. A fertilizer with less nitrogen is best for young plants. Jade plants require direct sunlight to grow, just like all other succulent plants. My cheat sheet will help you see how your succulents react to different water levels. You can find our detailed new tips on watering succulents and the Most Common Problems among Succulent Growers here. Splitting the offsets is the best way to propagate Sempervivums. Each rosette is monocarpic, meaning it dies after flowering, but the offsets will continue to reproduce vegetatively, allowing the plant to seem to live forever.

The generic name of "Sempervivum," (sem'per-VEE vum), means "always" or "forever") alive. It is a compound of two Latin words, the adverb "semper," meaning "always," and "vivuvm," the neuter form of the adjective "vivus," meaning "alive," and refers to the plant's hardiness and durability. Sempervivums are with a wide range of colors of the leaves and the size and form of the rosettes. It is not a good thing, but it does have a side benefit. New clones can form on old, unheaded stalks. As the "chicks", mature, they will produce offsets and eventually become "hens". The mature rosette hen produces offsets or "chicks", either around them or at their ends. Chopping off the crown of your etiolated succulent and then replanting it ensures you end up with a vigorous and beautiful succulent plant. In most cases, they will first stretch towards the closest light source and then eventually die. Aphids seem to be attracted to plants stressed from insufficient light.

There are many types of lighting that can be used to grow indoor plants. At least two inches is the optimal pot size. Rosettes range in size from 0.5 to 6 inches (11.3 to 15 cm). Sempervivums are some of the most frost-resistant succulents. This makes them a favorite garden plant. Peppermint has been a popular choice for gardeners. Others have had success by planting peppermint alongside succulents. Some gardeners also have the option of soaking cotton balls in peppermint oil, and then spreading them around the garden. Before deciding what to do about your sunburned succulents, it's important to recognize the symptoms of sunburns. The common name "Hen and Chicks", is shared by plants from other genera such as Echeveria. Although the members of genus Sempervivum are often easy to recognize, they may be confused with Echeveria. The root mealybugs and vine weevils are even harder to notice. Even a clone can look very different under various growth conditions or different times of the year.

To allow gases to flow, they also have stomata which open and close at different times throughout the day. Here, we are going to make sure they don't have to. Even for those who don't like poison cactus plants, succulents or air plants are great. They are versatile enough to be used in a wide range creative projects. Blue Agave sap can cause irritation so be careful when moving or repotting. They are susceptible to rust disease. To keep indoor Sempervivums healthy, grow lights may be an option. These pests could be controlled by spraying your plant with 70% rubbing vodka. I can't help but to do it. Use sterilized pruning shears, or a sharp knife to prune. They can be used to create living wreaths and roofs and tapestries as well as vertical gardens, fairy houses, terrariums, and other areas where bulletproof beauty is needed. For a more serious infestation, you can use insecticidal soap or an insecticide.
